respray time, so a couple of questions.......
« on: June 18, 2010, 03:52:07 PM »

ok, so its time to spray the track bike! Im going to go to halfords to have a look at some of their colour charts on monday, to pick out either a nice firey red, or electric blue. Forst question: how much will i need? I have access to paint gun and compressor, so wont need rattle cans.
next, is there a particular finish that i should steer clear from, being a novice sprayer? ie pearl/metalic etc.
3rd, what would be the recomended ratio of paint to thinners, and what pressure should i set the compressor to?
4th, laquer, is there an all purpose type available, is petrol resistant more expesive?
Im sure more questions wil surface before i start, but these are the biggies for me!

Petrol resistant lacquer is generally more expensive to buy.

Generally youd only coat the tank in this stuff as thats the most vulnerable area...

I would have said a litre to 1.5l would be more than enough to spray your bike. But someone may correct me on this.

I used to mix paint at halfords, but thats all i ever did lol.

Metallic silver first then a blow over in blue ;). To be honest you want to be using 2 pack laquer which is petrol proof which is dirty stuff and really you need a full face mask with air supply.

If your going for a plain non metallic paint then you don't need laquer and you can spray with cellulose and a reasonable charcoal face mask. You probably need about 1l for a whole bike, and look in your yellow pages for a local paint suppliers.

but if i laquer the tank to stop it being damaged by fuel, wont i have to laquer everything else to maintain the same finish?

Cellulose is pretty petrol resistant anyway.
